School Counseling
Instructor: Miss Flaherty, Mrs. Jefferson, & Mrs. Smith
The School Counseling Department at Bennett Elementary serves to provide a comprehensive and developmentally appropriate counseling program. The school counselors enhance and support the academic, personal/social, and career development needs of our students. Our work is done through classroom lessons, small group counseling, and school wide programs. We also strive to meet each individual student's needs. In addition to maximizing student achievement, we strive to incorporate leadership, advocacy, and collaboration within our Bennett community.

Bennett's school counseling program is aligned with the PWCS school counseling curriculum as well as with the ASCA National Model. The school counseling curriculum at Bennett is supported by special programs such as parent education workshops, character counts, and first friends. These special programs further encourage and empower students and families in an ever-changing 21st century.

Class Announcements
Welcome Back!
The School Counseling department would like to welcome all of our Bennett families back to school! We are very excited to start the new year together. Miss Flaherty is especially excited to be working with two new counselors this year. Mrs. Jefferson will be joining us from Alvey Elementary on Wednesdays and Thursdays and Mrs. Smith will joining us from Westridge Elementary and she will be here on Mondays.

Be on the lookout for your Bear Claw newsletter from the counseling department in the coming weeks as well as information on small groups with the counselor. We are looking forward to working with you and your child this year. We have a lot of exciting things in store. Please let us know if we can be of assistance in the coming school year.
RAMP!

We are pleased to announce that Bennett's School Counseling Program has earned RAMP. RAMP stands for recognized ASCA Model Program. What this means is that our school is a model program for other schools across the United States.
Small Groups with the Counselor
Small groups with the counselors will start around the beginning of October. Small groups are focused on learning skills that students need to be successful. Information on groups that are offered by the School Counseling Department can be found in the "Groups" folder below, and should be sent home with your student very soon. Group subjects include Friendship, Study Skills, Success, Self-Control, Deployment Support, Grief, and Changing Families. We also develop additional groups to meet the needs of our students when appropriate. If you are interested in having your child participate in one of these groups, or have questions about the groups, please contact Erin Flaherty at flaheree@pwcs.edu.
600 Club
This year Bennett will be continuing our 600 Club. The 600 Club serves to recognize students who have scored a perfect 600 on one or more of their Virginia SOL tests from the previous school year. As a member of the 600 club, students will participate in a special academic project with one of our Encore specialists during our core extension block. Students will meet with their assigned Encore specialist approximately once per month for a half hour. The students will then present their projects to our 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students and teachers at our SOL Pep Rallies at the end of May. In addition to these projects, students will also be acknowledged with a special wall display.

We are very excited to be continuing this club. We hope that we will have even more friends that can join our group next year. Please encourage your child to work their hardest in school and to try their best on their SOL tests this year!
